Probabilistic Attribution

Understand how Pivotstring tracks conversions when click IDs are unavailable.

What is Probabilistic Attribution?

A tracking method used when click IDs or device identifiers are unavailable. It matches conversions using contextual data like campaign and affiliate IDs.

Modern privacy restrictions limit deterministic tracking.

Why It Is Needed

  • Track conversions without click IDs
  • Maintain attribution accuracy
  • Ensure fair affiliate reporting

How It Works

1. Click URL

https://affclix.org/c?d={domain_id}&c={campaign_id}&a={affiliate_id}&sub_aff6=value

2. Postback URL

https://affclix.org/p?d={domain_id}&privacy=1&auth={auth_token}&sub_adv6=value|campaign_id,affiliate_id

The auth token is your tenant's domain-level security token. The tracker rejects any privacy postback whose auth does not match your domain, preventing spoofed conversions.

3. Matching Logic

  • Click data stored with identifiers
  • Postback matches via sub IDs
  • Fallback to probabilistic when click_id missing

Less precise than deterministic tracking.

Implementation Steps

For Affiliates

For Advertisers

Best Practices

  • Use consistent IDs
  • Ensure unique sub IDs
  • Monitor fraud signals

Conclusion

Probabilistic attribution ensures tracking continuity in privacy-restricted environments.
